The oldest and biggest parish in the Mzuzu Diocese, St Theresa based at Katete in Champhira, Mzimba, will on October 12 2013 celebrate 75 years of existence at a ceremony to be held at the parish.

The parish was established in 1938.

A priest at the parish, Father Albert Chirwa, said President Joyce Banda and Vice-President Khumbo Kachali are some of the high profile people invited to the occasion.

“The President has assured us of her presence,” said Chirwa.

Activities lined up for the day include mass, fundraising and traditional dances.

The priest said the parish needs money to renovate the church building and other structures.

“As I said, the parish was established long time ago and there is need for renovations. We appeal to well-wishers to help the parish,” said Chirwa.

He said the parish also needs more priests. Currently, the parish has only three priests who oversee 49 denominations.

One of the priests at the parish, Father Paul Chirwa, also made an impassioned plea for assistance to prepare for the commemorations and renovate buildings.

“The bank details are: St. Theresa Catholic Parish Diamond Jubilee, Malawi Savings Bank Limited, Jenda Agency, Account Number: 2084469603001 or contact Rev. Fr. Albert Fiskani Chirwa on 0999114638/0884343481,” said Chirwa.
